Refelxive Pronouns

REFLEXIVE PRONOUNS

A.    INTRODUCTION

1.      Reflexive pronoun is a type of pronoun that is preceded by the adverb, adjective, pronoun, or         noun to which it refers, so long as that antecedent is located within the same clause.

(Kata ganti refleksif adalah jenis kata ganti yang didahului oleh kata keterangan, kata sifat, kata ganti, atau kata benda yang dirujuknya, asalkan yang mendahului berada dalam klausa yang sama).

2.      In English grammar, a reflexive pronoun indicates that the person who is realizing the action of   the verb is also the recipient of the action.

(Dalam tata bahasa Inggris, kata ganti refleksif menunjukkan bahwa orang yang menyadari tindakan kata kerja juga penerima tindakan).

 

Example:

1.      I was in a hurry, so I washed the car myself.

(Saya sedang terburu-buru, jadi saya mencuci mobil sendiri)

2.      You are too young to go out by yourselves.

(Anda terlalu muda untuk keluar sendiri)

3.      Snow White’s Stepmother saw herself in the mirror.

(Ibu Tiri Putri Salju melihat dirinya di cermin)

4.      God helps those who help themselves.

(Tuhan menolong orang yang menolong dirinya sendiri)

5.      He hurt himself while rising the bike.

              (Dia melukai dirinya sendiri saat naik sepeda)

B.     THEMSELVES VS EACH OTHER

The relationship between each other and themselves deserves special attention. They are pronouns but they express different ideas. But because of the similarity in the circumstances that both categories of pronouns are used, they are usually confused with one another.

-Homer and Marge love themselves. (Homer loves himself and Marge loves herself).

-Homer and Marge love each other. (Homer loves Marge and Marge loves Homer).

Example:

a.       They love themselves (mereka mencintai diri mereka sendiri)

b.      They will do the task themselves (mereka akan mengerjakan tes mereka sendiri)

c.       Lisa and Dita are shouting at each other (Lisa dan Dita saling berteriak)

d.  Marge and her sister talk to each other on the phone everyday. (Marge dan saudara     perempuannya berbicara satu sama lain di telepon setiap hari)
